Hold Music: what callers hear while they wait
Choose a track from the licensed library or upload your own MP3 or WAV, and set the default that plays on hold and in queues.
Which plans include it
Included on Plus and above. On Free Trial, Entry you can add it on its own at £2.50 a month from Features & add-ons.
What it means
Music on hold (MOH) — the audio that plays when you put someone on hold or they wait in a queue. Silence makes callers think they have been cut off.
What it does
- Offers a System Library of pre-loaded, licensed tracks.
- Uploads your own MP3 or WAV (10–60 seconds, up to 50 MB).
- Sets one track as the default for your account.
- Previews any track before you use it.
Every part of the page
- Your Hold Music
- Tracks you have uploaded. "Set Default" chooses the one that plays.
- System Library
- Pre-loaded tracks for every account. "Set as default" to use one. "In use" marks the current track.
- Upload Music
- Name + Audio File. MP3 or WAV, 10 to 60 seconds, up to 50 MB.
How to use it
Use a library track
- Open Hold Music.
- Preview tracks in System Library.
- Press "Set as default". It now plays on hold and in queues.
Use your own message
- Make a 30–60 second file (music bed + a message such as "Did you know we open Saturdays?").
- Upload Music, name it, choose the file.
- Set Default.
Examples
Calm professional sound
Choose a gentle acoustic track from the library for a solicitor's office; choose something upbeat for a gym.
Your own audio
Upload an MP3 that mixes music with short messages like "Did you know we now offer Saturday appointments?"
Recommended settings
- ★A 30–60 second loop with a short spoken message works best.
- ★Only upload music you have the rights to — commercial chart music needs a licence.
- ★Calm, steady music sounds better on a phone line than busy tracks with a lot of bass.
Abbreviations on this page
- MOH — Music On Hold
- What callers hear while they wait on hold or in a queue — music, a message, or both.
- Example: The music a caller hears while you check stock is MOH.
- MOH class — Music-on-hold class
- The named set of hold music the phone system plays. You set it by choosing a default track on the Hold Music page.
- Example: Choose a default track on Hold Music and that becomes the MOH class callers hear on hold.
- MP3 / WAV — Audio file formats
- The two most common sound file types. WAV is full quality and larger; MP3 is smaller.
- Example: Download a recording as MP3 to email it; keep the WAV if you need the original quality.
Questions
Which plans include hold music?+
Plus and above. On Entry and the Free Trial it can be added on its own as Music on hold.
Can I use a song from the radio?+
Only with a licence for public performance. The System Library tracks are cleared for use.
Why must tracks be 10–60 seconds?+
Tracks loop; a short track keeps the file small and a message repeating at a sensible interval.
