What it means

International calling means ringing a number outside the UK, for example +33 for France or 00 1 for the USA. It is switched off on every account as standard. This protects you from unexpected bills and from fraud, where someone gets into a phone system and runs up calls to expensive overseas numbers.

What it does

  • Lets every account call UK landlines (01, 02 and 03), UK mobiles (07) and freephone numbers (0800 and 0808).
  • Blocks calls to numbers outside the UK, however they are dialled: +, 00 or the country code on its own.
  • Blocks premium-rate and special numbers (09, 087, 118, 070 personal numbers and 076 pagers).
  • Shows a message in the softphone when you try to dial abroad, with a button to ask for international calling.
  • Plays a short spoken message if you dial abroad from a desk phone or the mobile app.
  • Always connects 999 and 112 emergency calls.

Every part of the page

International calls are not switched on (softphone message)
Appears when you dial a number outside the UK. It explains why the call was not made and lets you send a request.
Countries you need to call
Tell us where you call, so we can confirm the rates for those countries.
Request international calling
Sends your request to the Silux Call team. Nothing is switched on, and nothing is charged, until we have agreed the rates with you.

How to use it

Ask for international calling

  1. Open the Softphone and dial the overseas number. The international calls message appears.
  2. Type the countries you need to call, and anything we should know.
  3. Press "Request international calling".
  4. We contact you to confirm the international rates. Additional charges apply.
  5. Once you agree, we switch it on and you can dial abroad from every phone on your account.

Dial a UK number correctly

  1. Dial the full 11-digit number starting 0, for example 020 7946 0000 or 07700 900000.
  2. You can also use +44 followed by the number without its first 0.
  • ★Only ask for international calling if your business really calls abroad. Leaving it off is the best protection against phone fraud.
  • ★If you call one country often, ask about a calling bundle when you make your request.

Questions

Can I call abroad on the free trial?+

No. Free trials can call UK landlines, mobiles and freephone numbers only.

Can I call abroad on a paid plan?+

Not as standard. International calling is not included in any plan. Ask for it to be switched on; additional charges apply.

How much do international calls cost?+

It depends on the country. We confirm the rates with you before international calling is switched on, so there are no surprises.

Why did my call abroad not connect?+

International calling is switched off on your account. You will hear a short message, or see one in the softphone. Send a request and we will be in touch.

Can people abroad call my UK number?+

Yes. Incoming calls from abroad to your UK number work as normal. The block only stops your outgoing calls.

Why can I not call 09 or 087 numbers?+

Premium-rate and special numbers are blocked on every account to protect you from high charges and fraud.

Do emergency calls still work?+

Yes. 999 and 112 always connect, whatever your account settings.
